Welcome to Who What Wear UK's Brit Month, a four-week-long riot of brilliant wardrobe-related things that just so happen to be British. From homegrown startup brands that we want to bring to your attention to the naturally awe-inspiring stylings of our nation's best dressed street stars, this is your hub for the finest fashion intel from these fair Isles.
If you are a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl, you need to follow Lizzy, as she lives in the Britpop trainers and vintage Levi's that were considered the uniform of the Haçienda crowd. While her leather bikers, ripped jeans and grey tailored jackets are typical of the Northern Quarter area, she explains that there are two clear style divides in Manchester.
"There is also a big football scene in Manchester, so you see some seriously glam ladies too," adds Lizzy. "It's not really my style, but they always look incredible and so polished." In some Manchester spots, you'll see Kim Kardashian West–esque bodycon, Birkin handbags and Christian Louboutin heels, while other areas are all about Levi's and vintage.
DON'T MISS THE INDEPENDENT BOUTIQUES
When it comes to shopping, Lizzy says: "Of course I love Selfridges for a bit of window-shopping and the occasional purchase, and an & Other Stories also opened recently, which is one of my favourite high-street shops." But there are are plenty of boutiques to visit too—Lizzy recommends Cow and Pop Boutique on Oldham Street for vintage shopping, Oklahoma on High Street for gifts, and Magma for books, magazines and gifts on Oldham Street. Another of her top tips for shopping in Manchester is to go toAfflecks—"It's like a massive indoor market full of vintage shops and lots more. I've been properly lost in there before," she tells us.
Lizzy says that the one essential item to get the Northern Quarter look is vintage Levi's jeans. And so it's no surprise that she reveals her one essential piece is: "Denim, denim and also sometimes denim. It's out of hand! I love straight-leg jeans at the moment, and vintageLevi's are the best."
